Abstract
The article gives a description of the three periods of the peaks of Dostoevsky's popularity in the United States. In the first period (from 1881 to the 1920s), his reputation as a psychologist, a prophet was formed, a myth was formed about him as an exponent of the Russian soul. "An American Tragedy" by Dreiser was certainly written under the influence of Dostoevsky's work. In the second period, 1940-1960s, the spirituality of Dostoevsky's works was opposed to the spirit of conformism and consumption that was taking hold in American society at that time. The ideas of ezistentialism, as well as the popularity of the novel about a teenager in the United States, contributed to a new reading of Dostoevsky's works. We find similar features of the hero in Dostoevsky and Salinger ("The Catcher in the Rye"), and also U. Karatkevich ("Ears under your sickle"), K. McCullers, S. Piatt, Faulkner. The third period of Dostoevsky's reception in the USA is the present. The attention of American writers is attracted to such features of Dostaevsky's work as his fantastic realism, the use of grotesque techniques, the mixture of the tragic and the comic, the theme of duality.
