Abstract
Since the middle of the XX century, the tourism industry as an integral part of the tertiary and quaternary
sectors of the world economy has occupied a leading position. As you know, it, along with natural resource,
labor, production, and infrastructure potentials, makes up the complex potential of the territory. One of the
promising areas of development of modern tourism is educational tourism. The scope of its study is
characterized by dualism, and is directly related to both the implementation of tourism activities and the
receipt of educational services.
The article examines the theoretical aspects of educational tourism, provides its historical analysis of
development from antiquity to the present. The distinctive features of educational tourism are analyzed. The
differentiation of tours by scale, duration, method of organization, number of participants, time, age of
consumers of the educational product, acquired skills, forms of education and features of the educational
environment is given. The distinctive features of the development of modern society are the general
globalization and digitalization. The latter have determined the active growth, development and spread of
the development of digital technologies around the world. For this reason, augmented and virtual realities
used in the organization of educational tourism are considered as a separate issue. The article characterizes
virtual and real objects, provides the basic requirements for their selection as tourism objects.
