Проблема национальной идентичности в американском политическом дискурсе и художественной литературе

Abstract

Search for identity is the idea and the activity that sums up American intellectual life at present and the main streams of thought of its literature. In the summer of 2004 Harvard Professor Samuel P. Huntington published a book in the United States entitled, Who Are We? America’s Great Debate. In it he rejected the mixture of cultural pluralism and ideological civic culture that has served as the dominant definition of American nationhood for the last five decades. Professor Robert Mikkelsen, as a liberal, transnational, cosmopolitan, academic, a Democrat living abroad, views the United States as a culturally pluralistic nation made up of a variety of ethnic groups held together by a common civic culture and ideology. The article is devoted to the analysis of the notions of citizenship and national identity expressed in this discussion and their interpretation in the novels by W. Edmonds, H. Fast and P. Roth.

В последней трети 20-го – начале 21-го веков проблема американской идентичности становится основной и для общественно-политической мысли США, и для ее культуры. Наиболее яркое проявление полярно противоположных мнений по этому вопросу представлено в книге Сэмюэля Хантингтона «Кто мы? Вызовы американской национальной идентичности» и в реакции на эту книгу, содержащейся в докладе Роберта Миккелсена: «Большой шаг вперед: Мы и Они». В статье содержится анализ понятий гражданственности и национальной идентичности, сформулированных в этой дискуссии, и их интерпретация в романах У. Эдмондса, Г. Фаста, Ф. Рота.
