Abstract
This article presents the findings of a multimodal composing project with a seventh-grade bilingual student Sarah, analyzed through the lens of activity theory. Activity theory allowed us to not only identify the challenges, contradictions, and disruptions within the activity system of Sarah’s composing process, but to view them as opportunities for change, growth, and learning. We identified three types of contradictions in Sarah’s composing that offered important opportunities for learning: those relating to the content of the video; those relating to the design of the video; and those relating to collaboration. The participant addressed content contradictions by looking outward, design contradictions by looking inward, and collaboration contradictions by accepting suggestions made by others. This study demonstrates how one learner leveraged flexible thinking through multimodal composing to learn about content, composing, and language while creating a plan to achieve her future career goals.
