Abstract
In order to determine the adequacy of self-assessment of physical development of adolescents and to identify gender-related characteristics, 478 students aged 10-16 were examined. Underweight was observed in 14,3 % of boys and 14.9 % of girls, while overweight and obesity were observed in 17.5 % and 13.9 %, respectively. Normal weight in self-assessment was reported by 59.1 % of boys and 63.4 % of girls. 19.2 % of boys and 22.8 % of girls, respectively, consider themselves thin or very thin, while overweight or very overweight were reported by 20.6 % and 15.1 % of girls. The strength of the relationship between objective and subjective assessment was: x = 0.371 (p < 0.001) for boys and x = 0.507 (p < 0.001) for girls. 64.6 % of boys and 48.8 % of girls were satisfied with their weight (p < 0.01). Although objectively more overweight, boys were less likely than girls to report the need to lose weight. Boys are less likely to make efforts to normalize their weight. Distorted subjective perceptions of the balance of body weight are common among girls: being underweight may be considered normal.
