Abstract

The article examines the close relationship between the Japanese tea ceremony and the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. The relevance of the topic stems from the insufficient study of the philosophical and practical roots of the tea ritual in Russian and Belarusian Oriental studies. The author aims to analyze the unity of the philosophical and practical foundations of Rinzai Zen and the tea ceremony as two aspects of a single cultural system. The first part of the work presents the basic principles of Zen (transmission of teachings beyond texts, independence from words, direct pointing to the human mind, awakening to one’s own nature) and demonstrates how these principles were embodied in the Japanese Rinzai school with its practice of koans and the concept of sudden enlightenment. A historical overview from Eisai (12th century) to Sen no Rikyū (16th century) shows that the tea ceremony developed not as an independent aesthetic practice but as a secular form of Zen asceticism. The main focus is on semiotic analysis. The author identifies five codes of the tea ceremony (spatial, objective, somatic, acoustic, and pedagogical), each referring to a corresponding element of Rinzai Zen practice. Drawing on the treatise «Nanporoku» and Japanese sources, the article reveals structural correspondences between the roji garden and the monastery garden, the tokonoma niche and the butsudan altar, the seiza posture and the meditative posture, and the sounds of the ritual and sonic koans. The conclusion argues that the well-known saying «Tea and Zen are one» receives not a metaphorical but a semiotic substantiation.
